Welcome, Illinois One!

Yesterday, Southwest Airlines honored the State of Illinois, City of Chicago, and the wonderful Chicago Employees with the unveiling of Illinois One, a Boeing 737 emblazoned with an artist’s rendering of the state flag.

Illinois One joins 12 other 737s in Southwest’s fleet that carry a distinctive paint scheme: Arizona One, California One, Lone Star One, Nevada One, New Mexico One, three Shamu aircraft, Silver One, Triple Crown One, Maryland One, and Slam Dunk One.

These special paint jobs are kept a secret to build anticipation until they are finally revealed. After yesterday’s unveiling at the Chicago Message to the Field, they flew the newly painted plane to the DAL Hangar and I got to sneak a peek of it this morning in person. This beautiful new aircraft is truly a work of labor and art, requiring 26 people working three shifts over the course of six days to paint. More than 93 gallons of paint and ten different colors make up the look of Illinois One.

Take a look at the newest addition to our fleet!
