Life in the Fast Lane...

Ok, so I apologize to my faithful readers that I've been somewhat behind in my blogging. I have been extremely busy recently. Have you felt the same way?

Let me catch you up!

Monday, September 29th, was National Hunger Awareness Day. I volunteered along with several other Southwest Employees to help sort food and pack boxes at the North Texas Food Bank (NTFB). The NTFB is a hunger relief organization that distributes donated, prepared and purchased food through several feeding programs in 13 North Texas counties. On this particular day, we were helping prepare meals for the families who were affected by Hurricane Ike. In just the short amount of time we were there, we were able to prepare over 510,000 meals! Keep up the good work NTFB! You'll reach your goal of Closing the Gap on Hunger by 2011!

Wednesday, October 1st, was Media Day at Southwest Airlines. We invited several reports to come to our Headquarters here in Dallas to hear from our Senior Leadership and their departments on what is going on at Southwest. It was a day filled with wonderful presentations, great though provoking questions, and a little announcement about Southwest entering the Twin Cities!

Thursday, October 2nd, was Kidd's Kids Day! Kidd's Kids is an organization founded on the ideals of making a difference in the life of a special needs child. The nationally syndicated morning show personality, Kidd Kraddick, founded this organization over 17 years ago after hearing a heart wrenching story about a mother and her daughter who had cerebral palsy. After hosting a radio show to help raise money for this mother/daughter duo, he realized the power of his on-air audience and decided to make this his philanthropy. Each year, Kidd's Kids hosts a radio-thon to raise money to send between 40 and 50 families to Walt Disney World in Florida. This "vacation" is a once in a life time opportunity for many of these families which enables them to make lasting memories together. Southwest Airlines was the host of the phone bank for the radio-thon this year. Bright and early, at 5:00 am, I was at the office, along with a few other bright-eyed co-workers, to answer the phones when the donations started to roll in! They even hosted part of the radio show at Southwest that morning! All in all, Kidd's Kids raised over $435,000 in donations!

Wednesday, October 8th, was FAIR DAY! Our office was able to take off and go experience the sights, smells, and sounds of the great State Fair of Texas! I started the day off with a Fletcher's Corney Dog. YUM-O! Then we headed to the pavilion for a wonderful shopping experience. On our way out of the shops we of course had to grab some shredded, deep fried potatoes. Then we made our way to the Midway and saw the miniature pony and the two-headed snake. We visited a few more vendors, and made a pit stop for Jack's French Fries, cotton candy, and of course, a lemon chill! So as you can see, it was another successful year filled with eating and sight seeing at the fair. We had a wonderful time! For photos of our caloried filled day, click here!

Friday, October 10, is the DAL LUV Classic Golf Tournament. This is an annual golf tournament that Southwest Airlines puts on to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House. There are two shifts of players, and AM and a PM shift, and then the festivities conclude with a big cookout and performance by a local band. Raffle tickets are sold, prizes are won, and there's plenty of FUN to be had!

Even though it's been a little crazy lately, I've been having a blast! Stay tuned for more updates, and let me know what's been keeping you busy!

That is so neat! When I was listening to the radio on my way to work, I wondered if you were involved at all with the Kidds Kids stuff up there at Southwest! What a rewarding job!
