A Little Election Day Fun!

I'm not an avid political follower, and could really care less about watching the media rehash their views on McCain and Obama on the big screen one more time. Don't get me wrong, I care deeply about the future of our country; which is why I believe the best thing we can do is to get out and vote. This year, our Legislative Communications and Grassroots department is making every effort to promote just that--for you to get out and vote. They came up with this very creative and fun Advent Calendar to help us all count down the days until we head to the polls. As you open the tab for each day, there's a quote from someone who has been influential in our country's history; Benjamin Franklin, James Madison, Jane Adams, Frederick Douglas, and T.S. Eliot, just to name a few. (The only thing the calendar is missing is the candy!) Below are some examples of the quotes:

October 6 - "The only title in our democracy superior to that of President is the title of citizen." - James Madison

October 14 - "Voting is one of the few things where boycotting in protest clearly makes the problem worse rather than better." - Jane Bowles

I also received an email today with a few "enlightening" and somewhat humorous quotes. Enjoy...

'Suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress.... But then I repeat myself.' -Mark Twain

'Government is the great fiction, through which everybody endeavors to live at the expense of everybody else.' -Frederic Bastiat, French Economist (1801-1850)

'Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.' -Ronald Reagan (1986)

'In general, the art of government consists of taking as much money as possible from one party of the citizens to give to the other.' -Voltaire (1764)

'Just because you do not take an interest in politics doesn't mean politics won't take an interest in you!' -Pericles (430B.C.)

'No man's life, liberty, or property is safe while the legislature is in session.' -Mark Twain (1866)
